Employee misuse of internet costs firms dear |
Small and medium sized businesses are plagued by employee misuse of the internet - and it’s costing them dear, according to a Birmingham businessman. Research has identified that eight out of 10 employees send and receive personal emails at work, while nine out of 10 visit non work- related sites during business hours. However, a Birmingham company director - himself a victim of serious computer misuse - claims to have a solution after two years of research and development of a new software program called Spysure.
Zafar Majid said: “I had no idea just how damaging this type of problem could be. Two years ago I was managing a company in the telecommunications business.”

“Almost by accident, I discovered that two of our employees were misusing the office computer to access internet gaming sites, shop on eBay and access personal email accounts where they sent and received thousands of personal emails.”
The experience gave Mr Majid the incentive he needed to research how he could be aware of and in control of the way company computers were used.
He assembled a skilled IT team that developed employee monitoring software, which records all the internet activity of each employee in the workplace.
He claims many employers are happy to allow a modest use of emails and surfing during lunch breaks and non-productive office time. However, he says there is a large and rapidly growing number of employees abusing their access.
Nowhere is this more of a problem than within Small and Medium sized companies (SMEs) where the practice can cripple businesses.
Spysure monitors all the internet activity of each employee. All website, email and chat room activity can be seen at the touch of a key. Adult sites, gambling and gaming sites can be blocked and every keystroke recorded.
A ‘stealth mode’ can also be employed which carries out the monitoring secretly although Spysure recommends that employees should be told about the installation of the monitoring software as this encourages employees to be responsible in their computer use.
The success of Spysure has also led to the development of a new Spysure Home edition.
